Wapaloosie Watusi

Here's a cute little legend for you:

The Wapaloosie

Not all legendary creatures are big and scary.  Some are small and pretty cute, in this case.

There's not a lot out there about the Wapaloosie.  This little guy comes from lumberjack folklore.  He lives in the northwestern forests of the United States, though is very difficult to find as they tend to hand out in the treetops eating their favorite food: conch mushrooms.

The Wapaloosie is about the size of a Dachshund with shrew-like features.  Its feet and toes are like those of a woodpecker.  The end of the tail is also spiked to help it climb up a tree.  The movement of the Wapaloosie is almost comedic - it humps its way up the tree like an inchworm, using its clawed feet and spiked tail as anchors.

Legend has it that a lumberjack came across a Wapaloosie when he felled a tree near Humptulips River in Washington state.  He shot the creature, then took a closer look to see what it was.  On examination, he decided that its pelt would make a wonderful (and serviceable) pair of mittens.  He skinned it, cured the hide and carefully made his mittens with the fur side out.

Once our lumberjack put the gloves on, he grabbed his axe to head to work.  He was shocked when his mittened hands started inching their way to the top of the handle on their own accord.  So upset by this happening, he tore off the mittens and threw them to the ground.  The mittens were last seen crawling across the ground, over logs, and headed for the trees where they could climb to the top as the Wapaloosie was want to do in life.

This is a great little tale and a very cool legend.  Is it real?  Only the lumberjacks know...
